What Inspires Two Bachelors to Write a Book About Lifelong Marriage?
Mat and Jason interviewed roughly 100 Marriage Masters on the West Coast between Fall 2003 and Spring 2006. Based on the stories and concepts gathered in those interviews, they finally mustered a Project Everlasting book proposal which they knew would get picked up by a big publisher. It didn’t. In fact, it was deemed so unsaleable that their literary agent dropped them!
So, the ambitious duo, knowing the wisdom they’d already collected needed to be heard, decided to take matters into their own hands and go find the stories from the nation’s best couples with or without a book deal. “We’ll self-publish if we have to,” they said numerous times. Luckily, they wouldn’t have to. In June 2006, after announcing “The Search for America’s Greatest Marriages” on the Today Show and asking for nominations of role model couples, Project Everlasting found a wonderful home at Simon & Schuster. To pay for the tour, Mat and Jason found a few like-minded companies to sponsor them, including Fleetwood RVs, Southwest Airlines, Hilton Hotels, Platinum Guild Int., and 1-800Flowers.
The tour ended up being 1000x more work and stress than Mat Boggs, Jason Miller, and their small team, including Mat’s Grandma Dorothy (90-plus-year-old Marriage Master), Pamela Potts (tour manager), Jessica Schulte (documentarian), and Christopher Lutz (production, driver), could have ever imagined it was going to be, but they did it! They crossed the country without killing each other, and, most importantly, they saw some of the most impressive displays of marital success they’d ever seen. After meeting with over 250 couples from all walks of life, from San Destin, Florida, to Seattle, Washington, and just about every place in between, Mat and Jason can happily say that their ambitious dream has finally happened. They can now proudly present to the world a book and film and message that are exactly aligned with what they’d set out to create back when “Project Everlasting” was just a working title scribbled on a dry-erase board. To be sure, there will be more adventures to come for the bachelors, but this one will be remembered as a very special journey, an accomplishment of which Grandpa Jack Manin, the inspiration for Project Everlasting, would be extremely proud.
Mat and Jason thank all who have made sacrifices to help make this dream a reality…you know who you are.
