“The List” :: What Do Guys Look For In A Lifelong Mate?

Mat and I received a question in our inbox that I’d love to post to our readers…

My question for y’all is, I have “The List” of Requirements that my future husband will have to meet to win my heart.   But, I know that for Mr. Right  (Dr. Wright I call him) to be attracted to me I must have certain qualities.  Could you please “Uncode” for me what a Gentleman looks for in a potential wife. After looking at my list I think that he is to good for me. :-)

What do you think? Do you think men have conscious lists of what they’re looking for in a mate? Are they similar to women’s lists? Dissimilar? How so?

Leave a comment below, share your thoughts. Perhaps we’ll do a free teleclass on this topic if enough of you are interested!

Not a male's first choice in bathroom decor

I’m standing in front of a bathroom sink in Denver, ready to dry my hands off, when something unexpected happens.

The hand towels make me cry.

Yes, I, a heterosexual male, am admitting that the look and feel of the soft, pastel yellow bathroom towel brings tears to my eyes.  So be it.

But before you label me a melodramatic freak o’ the linens, let me explain the back story of how I met Ron and Betty Anne Trapani, in whose bathroom I’m standing, and how their soft, yellow towels help me understand why marriage really does matter.

How We Knew: Hoyt & Ruth Anderson’s Love Story

Hoyt and Ruth Anderson
A LOVE STORY

It was a small town and the news had traveled fast. There was a new Junior High School teacher and she was young, beautiful and single. I learned it from my sister Bula, who was one of her students. She said, “Her name is Ruth but we have to call her Miss Spencer and she teaches English, drama, and gym.”

It was the Fall of 1937 and the town was Ephraim located in central Utah. Its main claim to fame is that it is home to an excellent small junior college – Snow College. I was 19 and a second year student there.

How We Knew: Bill and Nancy Montani’s Love story

A Love Story Made in Heaven

It was 1978. I was in the Biochemical Pharmacology program of the Pharmacy School at the University of Buffalo and had just decided to go on to graduate school. My sights were on McGill University in Canada. I was working the evening shift in the chemistry laboratory of Veterans Hospital in Buffalo, NY. One of the guys I was working with suggested we go out to celebrate my decision after work. So at midnight when our shift ended, Ray and I headed down to Coles Bar on Elmwood Avenue. I had no way of knowing serendipity was knocking.

Not long after we arrived Ray ran into Gary, a friend of his. While the three of us were talking a guy Gary knew walked by. Gary introduced his friend Bill, to Ray and me. When I looked into Bill’s eyes, the strangest thing happened. A thought suddenly came into my mind,

“This is the man you will marry.”

“Where did that come from?” I wondered. I had no idea who this “Bill” was, yet the message was crystal clear. The hair on my arms and the back of my neck rose. I was momentarily speechless.

He will be ninety in April, and his “bride,” as he tenderly calls her, just celebrated her eighty-fifth Birthday. The sparkle of affection dance in their eyes as if they‘ve just returned from their honeymoon. If it were not for the large collection of family portraits and memorabilia decorating their modest home, you might mistake them for newlyweds.
